Bolivian minister: President Morales’ plane rerouted to Austria on suspicion Edward Snowden on board – @APhttp://t.co/2pxW17lXrI
— Breaking News (@BreakingNews) July 2, 2013
“We don’t know who invented this lie. We want to denounce to the international community this injustice with the plane of President Evo Morales,” Choquehuanca said from Vienna, where the plane landed.
Morales had earlier met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit of major gas exporters in the Kremlin.
In an interview with Russia Today television, Morales said that his South American country would be willing to consider granting asylum to Snowden. – Washington Post
Here is a summary of events so far from UK Guardian LIVE BLOG:
- A major diplomatic incident has occured after a jet carrying the president of Bolivia was rerouted to Austria. Various European countries prevented the plane from overflying their airspace, amidst suspicions NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was onboard.
- Austrian foreign ministry officials subsequently said Snowden was not onboard. Morales, along with the Bolivian defence minister, remain at Vienna international airport.
- The defence minister has said that France, Portugal, Italy and Spain had prevented the jet from entering their airspace. The airspace ban is still being enforced by Spanish authorities. He blamed the decisions on pressure from the US government.
- A number of South American states have voiced outrage at the incident, and, according to Argentinian president Cristina Kirchner, the Peruvian president Ollanta Humala has called a meeting of the Union of South American Nations to discuss the ongoing events.
- The Bolivian vice president, Alvaro Garcia, said Morales had been“kidnapped by imperialiam”.
With uncanny timing, given events over the past 24 hours, Reporters Without Borders general secretary Christophe Deloire, and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange have co-signed an op-Ed in Le Monde calling on EU states to protect Edward Snowden. It says:
On October 12, 2012, the European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize for contributing to the “advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.” The EU should show itself worthy of this honor and show its will to defend freedom of information, regardless of fears of political pressure from its so-called closest ally, the United States …
This young man [Snowden] will remain abandoned in the transit zone of the Moscow airport only if the European countries abandon their principles, as well as a major part of the raison d’être of the EU. Expressions of diplomatic outrage will be empty gestures if the person responsible for the revelations is left isolated and abandoned.

Obama lied. Recall: “we’re not going to scramble jets for some 29 year old hacker.”

Can’t wait to see how it plays in Latin America that European nations refuse to allow Bolivia’s president to fly over their airspace.

The purpose of all of the “Snowden” drama, is really a smoke and mirrors ACT… We are being distracted by Snowden himself by the media and administration, when the REAL issue at hand, and the SHOULD be the focus is the information that Snowden made public or ‘leaked’ … Snowden should not be the point of interest, This administration AND it’s unconstitutional practices SHOULD BE. Gun control, talk of ‘disarming’ the people, healthcare reform, Government “Spying” on citizens…. Snowden Who? Who cares…. Why are we scrambling jets for a single man?(Did we scramble jets for Bin Laden? I know we spend trillions in his pursuit, but we didn’t seem to be as worried about catching Him as our government is with catching this AMERICAN CITIZEN, and SILENCING HIM.) Does he have MORE information? Why is President Obama and this administration SO WORRIED? Are they afraid that this may be one step closer to a “Call to Arms”… Maybe I’m a conspiracy theorist…or maybe this administration is… But, Snowden, he is the LEAST of my concerns. Our government on the other hand is very LARGE, very INVASIVE, and incredibly scary at the moment…Enter 1984…(Because EVERYONE else loves that reference)

Lautenberg, Schumer: Why Was a Charter Plane Also Rented by White House Used to Fly Bin Laden Family Out of USA After 9/11?
Friday, July 23, 2004NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) today demanded the White House explain how 13 members of the Bin Laden family were allowed to leave the US days after September 11 on board of the very same plane that was frequently chartered by the White House itself to carry members of the press corps on Presidential and Vice Presidential trips.
“Why would President Bush allow the Bin Laden family to leave the U.S. just one week after 9-11?” said Senator Lautenberg. “And now we find out the plane they used was the exact same one often chartered by the White House. This begs the question: Did the White House arrange the flight for the Bin Laden’s? Did the President of the United States turn the White House into the travel agency for the family of the man who killed thousands of Americans just a week earlier?”
