Activism Quicktip: Letters to the Editor
I am convinced that one of the easiest and best ways to support a cause and spread a message is through letters to local papers. It is also very cost effective, as in free. A well written, eye catching letter in a paper’s opinion section catches many people’s attention and allows you to explain your positions on many issues.
A few months ago I wrote into my local paper encouraging state legislators to coauthor a bill to stop the NDAA in Indiana. It ended up being the only letter published in that edition and received prominent placing. A few days later my state senator coauthored the bill. Now whether that was because of my letter or other pressure I don’t know, but I do know it didn’t hurt. I have had people who I am acquainted with mention that they enjoyed reading what I have sent in, so the reach of the writing is evident.
It is an encouragement to me when I see letters from others that share the same views as I do, a good reminder that we aren’t the only ones that are passionate about liberty. I recommend that others begin writing letters, pick an issue that is important to you and blast it out to as many relevant papers as you can. You may be surprised at the impact you will have.
