The best little Three-piece Old Time American String Band you’ve never heard of

Well, maybe you have heard of them by now? I had a chance to catch a wonderful set by The Tillers last Friday night at The Bishop in Bloomington, Indiana. On Monday they received what I’m guessing is their biggest exposure, featured by CMT.  No, this isn’t bluegrass technically speaking. They play in a style pre-dating bluegrass and yet, many of their songs are original. I call it “old-timey,” while I think they call themselves a “three-piece old time American string band.” Let’s just call it good music…Find out where they play next here.

From the live show I attended last Friday…Hear the full song here. Willie Dear:

It’s amazing how you can hear, despite their youth, an authentic world-weariness in The Tillers. Sadly, on December 2nd of 2013, they lost their original bass player and best friend, Jason Soudrette to cancer. His battle with Leukemia and their deep pain coping with his loss is something they talked openly about during the show last Friday. The place went completely silent as they dedicated a song to his memory. After the tune, they encouraged their fans to donate to help support his surviving wife and child. Here’s a playlist that should keep you dancing…or at the very least swaying for a good while. First up is one of my friend’s, Seth Boles, “faves,” as he’d put it:
