ACLU Defends Milo Yiannopoulos

The American Civil Liberties Union defends free speech, even if it’s hateful. That has some of their supporters upset. Lulu Garcia-Navarro talks to Lee Rowland, a senior staff attorney at the ACLU.

It looks like the ACLU’s new Twitter followers aren’t used to civil liberties. Here’s just a sample of the grief they are getting:

FLASHBACK: Many forget that the ACLU cut their teeth for civil liberties by defending the KKK in several infamous cases.

HARTFORD, March 17— The Connecticut chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union announced today that it would represent both the Ku Klux Klan and an antiracism group in challenging a new parade ordinance in Meriden.

The ordinance, which gives the Police Chief the power to ban demonstrations that he thinks could lead to violence, was approved after a Klan demonstration last March 20 in which counterdemonstrators began throwing rocks and bottles.

The Klan had received a permit to march this Saturday, but it was later revoked, and the applications of two anti-Klan groups were rejected as well… (1982 NYT)
